Jaded Optimist

Mothering, making, and generally blathering on

Wait, it is still November right? Phew.

Not much to report on here—just regular life, with a lot of rain and gloomy weather which isn’t great for picture taking. Some hail and power outages as well (luckily all brief so far).

C is busy loving school, learning to read, writing like crazy, drawing every chance she gets, and generally being her super cute self. We had the first parent/teacher conference of the year on Friday and learned (well, confirmed) that C is doing really well at math, writing, and art. We had been at school just the day before for the Kindergarten Thanksgiving feast (and a feast it was, although with a time slot from 10:30 – 11:30 many folks hadn’t worked up much of an appetite yet) which included some songs and costumes from the kids:

C had been reporting on the pilgrim outfit for days and really wants us all to dress up like this for Thanksgiving dinner. As we are eating out that day, I am thinking that plan is unlikely. (G’s cousin is coming to stay with us for a few days and G reports that both he and said cousin will want turkey, so out to eat it is.) The class also wrote about what made their family special (sorry for the photos—taken in a hurry holding the camera above the table without being able to look through the viewfinder):

Things to love here—G’s shoulder mounted head, the inclusion of Boston the cat, and the “silent r” which somehow snuck into M’s name. It was very sweet, as none of the other kids mentioned their siblings when relating what was special about their families.

C really, really loves her sister and they get along so well (ignoring some hair pulling from M and finger shaking lectures from C) that it is fun to be with them both.

M passed the 19 month mark a few weeks ago and is such an amazing kid. She has an independent streak that I do not remember from C’s toddlerhood. She wants to climb on everything (onto the table, the windowsill behind the living room couch, her own high chair, etc. etc.), walk on her own, cut and draw just like her big sis, etc. etc. Her speech is still…in progress, but she continues to embrace the eardrum-shattering scream, which unsurprisingly is quite effective. Although there are a few Starbucks which I think would prefer never to see us again. Ahem. She loves books and her little baby dolls and her happy is so incredibly happy. She doesn’t much like to be carried or put in a stroller (nor a grocery cart, which has made for some not so approving looks from other shoppers) but she does like C’s old trike. Luckily there is a handle for pushing.

(We try to get outside whenever there is a break in the rain to tucker this one out get the kid some exercise.) She is a walking, running, dancing, stair climbing machine. And she has the first part of jumping down—the squat.

G has been enjoying not travelling for a bit and does work and stuff.

I have many unphotographed projects to hopefully share someday. Two finished sweaters for M (well, except for the buttons), a sweater in progress for C, a hat in progress, C’s birthday skirt, a finished dress and an almost finished dress. And these pants for M which are from a very cute Oliver + S pattern:

She’s not much for posing for detailed photos unfortunately.
