Jaded Optimist

Mothering, making, and generally blathering on

One of those weeks that felt like two March 11, 2010

And it isn’t even over yet. The four hours that I sat waiting in the new, largely empty house (i.e., no comfy chairs) waiting for the Verizon guy who never showed definitely contributed to that.

C had “fairy tale day” at school this week. They all dressed up as fairy tale characters and also wrote their own stories which were then read aloud. I had insisted on “no princesses” this time (hey, it is fairy tale day, not Disney Fairy Tale day) so C was the sole little red riding hood. As I was hand sewing on the black frog closure at 2 am the night (morning?) before I was rethinking that stance. Perhaps a satin lined red panne velvet cape with an improvised hood wasn’t the best plan. Or certainly not the best plan for the night before.

But, mostly worth it I think:

(She is even wearing a dress that I made for her last year.) Forgot about the basket until the morning of, and gee we don’t have many baskets in the house. Hope grandma wasn’t expecting a lot of treats. (For those keeping track, the cape portion is from an Ottobre magazine and the hood was drafted by tracing an existing hooded sweatshirt. Realized too late that since the velvet is stretchy it lengthened, causing some pooling around the bottom binding. None of the kids seemed to notice.)

Days at home often include scenes such as these, as little M (who turned 23 months on Monday!) loves to put on whatever she finds around the house. And given that she is a kid willing to climb chairs onto the kitchen island, throw everything out of baskets and cupboards, and in one mind blowing incident climb onto the top of the stairway banister, she finds an awful lot.

Last weekend I took some shots of the kids for a photography assignment as well as to see how the light is in the new house. Just a few favorites here:

(OK, the last one isn’t a favorite, so much as one to save to show future boyfriends. The 2nd last one uses Mr. Potato Head earrings to great effect I think.)

I have been freecycling my little heart (and not so little garage) out, have four big bags for Community Services for the Blind tomorrow, washer/dryer are ordered and installed with only minor issues remaining, blinds guy did all the measuring today and I have the samples ready to show G when he is back in town, utilities switched to our names and garbage pickup scheduled…and even with all that I can hardly believe we are moving next week. Man, I thought that this week was tough…

News + Shenanigans March 2, 2010

Somebody lost her first tooth yesterday! It was quite sudden—the bottom two teeth have been slightly loose for seemingly months, and then yesterday evening she mentioned that one was very loose and about an hour later it fell out during dinner. Quite surprising for an unsuspecting tooth fairy. Ahem. And we had no special pillow or anything to put the tooth in. I could have gone without the shouts about how much blood there was (especially since we were at a restaurant at the time) and G turns out to be surprisingly queasy about loose teeth. C is very enthused about the $5 the tooth fairy left and has been inquiring all day when we can go to a toy store and what toys will cost $5. Sigh. The other bottom tooth is fairly loose as well. How nice to have exciting news about her teeth and jaw.

C loves to dress up and apply face paint (well, face crayons). This weekend she was a “persian kitty” and made up her little sis as well. They both meowed fairly convincingly.

(M got her hair cut this weekend and I am not so thrilled with it. The bangs seem uneven. This is what I get for sending G to get her hair cut I suppose.)

Little M likes to do what the big kids are doing, so she spends some time on computers (although this one is out of power it doesn’t seem to hamper her at all) and playing with horse legos.

(If you look closely you might be able to see where M got a hold of a pen and drew all over her legs. She can find a pen in the house within 5 seconds, despite the fact that I can never find any pens when I need them.)

M can be quite stubborn and opinionated at times, but she is also fairly hilarious. Bubble blowing (didn’t notice that there was no liquid in the container), her new favorite “side down”, and not even sure what this was about…

(Note: it is indeed spring here already, with the crocuses, apple trees, magnolia trees, and forsythia all in bloom. But temps are not quite to the point of requiring shorts and a tank top. This falls into the “choose your battles” category. Especially when she wanted to complete the outfit with her unused winter boots the other day…)

One more of that proud girl who is so excited to get “grown up teeth”.
