Jaded Optimist

Mothering, making, and generally blathering on

9 months in, 9 months out September 24, 2013

Quite the month here, what with all the new routines from school starting. Baby C seems to be taking it all in stride and thriving. This month alone, she started swimming and music classes, transitioned into a new crib, got her first tooth, rode in an outdoor swing, and caused one moment of terror. Really, just waiting on the crawling now.

How we never got her in a swing outside before, I don’t know. She loved it!

(OK, M pushes hard enough that C would be a little apprehensive at times, per the last picture.)

First tooth broke through on Saturday, and has been followed by vigorous use of teething toys and copious amounts of drooling.

(Can you spot the drool in the last two pictures?)

She is a super smiling baby, often totally distracted during swimming and music class by flirting with the other parents. But she can also make some fairly funny faces.

(Picture #3 is laughter.)

Still loves birthday cat. And really all her toys—she can play for a long time. Or until the sisters come to take the toys for themselves.

Eats it all—little bits of cheese now, and some scrambled egg yolks. Loves chicken. Still gets food all over.

Sooooo close to crawling, but hasn’t quite figured it out yet. Gets her feet in front of her butterfly stretch style and then almost rolls over them but not quite. Can move backwards, not quite intentionally though. You can see the feet here:

Backwards motion caused the one moment of terror, where in about 10 seconds of me putting some goat cheese on salads while she played on the kitchen floor, she backed up under the island, got her foot stuck, and then rolled over, with the foot turned about 180 degrees. She cried, I tried to get the foot out and felt it turned, couldn’t figure out which way she had rolled, started freaking out about breaking her leg/foot if I turned it the wrong way, did screaming (Me: “G! Help! Help! Oh my god! Help! Baby C! Help! Help!” G: “What is it?” Me: “HELP!!! Come here right away! Her foot, oh my god her foot!” G: “What do you need?” etc). We finally got the foot out (ok, probably only 30 seconds or so) and the heel area was fairly scuffed up and her foot looked a little swollen. But all has turned out fine—I think I cried more than she did, the swelling went down, she was able to put weight on it right away, etc. Scared the bejesus out of M and her friend who were home at the time though!

I am guesstimating baby C to be about 20 lbs. but we find out for sure tomorrow at the pediatrician. More updates as events warrant. Perhaps some day a picture of that tooth!

8 (and a half) Months September 8, 2013

Kind of missed that 8 month update due to being in Cleveland when the actual date hit and then back to school craziness, plus my blog going down for several days. Rest assured, baby C is still around and doing her best to spread smiles and joy.

Ha ha, just kidding she loves these sisters.

Let’s see….blue eyes, chewing on stuff, and baby yoga?

Likes cats, both birthday and otherwise?

OK, you can’t really tell but in the last picture she is looking at Boston, not at the camera. Boston will in fact walk up to C, rub up against her, let her pull ears, tail, etc. and practice “gentle” petting for quite awhile before giving her a gentle nibble. They are getting to be quite good friends.

So, baby C is eating like a champ—some small finger foods (cut up peach, nectarine, banana, cooked carrots, puffs, cheerios, and during one desperate vacation dinner, torn up bits of tater tots) and purees galore. She babbles quite convincingly and likes to have you babble back. Still doing some great sleeping, although there was some adjustment around the traveling. Grabs for everything and puts it in her mouth. Not so fun for, say, a four hour plane ride. Or during diaper changes. No teeth yet. Was kind of skinny and tall at her 6 month checkup but has been filling out nicely. Smiles and then buries her head for anyone looking her way. Rolls over both ways and can get around surprisingly well given that there is still no sign of crawling—one her stomach she does more of a superman attempt and then cries in frustration. Must be that diaper full of kryptonite! Has figured out how to touch the feely books and how to turn pages in general.

Oh, and I knit a dress for baby C before she was born…it kept looking huge. I finally remembered to put it on her. So not huge.

But she can totally rock the tunic look, am I right?

Summer Wrap up September 3, 2013

So…C and M started school today. Not the same school, but also not the same times so I was able to see them each off for their first days and pick them up as well. C definitely wanted to just be dropped off and walk to her class on her own; M was super tired after school.

They are each in new shoes, for which G actually took them shopping yesterday. While I stayed home, put the baby down for a nap, and read Lean In. Perfect.

Talking to M has been pretty hilarious lately.

M: “I need ketchup!”

G: “I can’t find it, we must be out.”

M: “That is because mens can’t find anything!”

M: “There goes a foot truck!”

Me: “??”

M: “Uh, what do you call the truck that takes cars?”
Me: “Ohhhh, a tow truck.”

Me: “M, are your teeth brushed? Are you ready for bed?”

M: “Yes, now I just need to put on my wings and my inside high heels.”

School supply shopping had been a bit rushed as we spent 10 days in Cleveland towards the end of August. Between preparing for trip, being on trip, and recovering from trip…well, things are still in a bit of disarray here. Still need to figure out music lessons for both of the girls (M’s piano teacher moved, and we are taking a break from C’s violin teacher) and perhaps a music class for baby C. But I did manage to hit the gym today for the first time since…er, a week or so before baby C was born. Yikes.

So, Cleveland. Saw all the grandparents and most of the relatives. Went to Akron zoo, Oberlin, a scenic train ride, swimming, church picnic, and yarn shopping (OK, that last one is just me). Watched the Black Stallion and Mary Poppins with the kids. Baby C had her first swimming experience and M had a bit of a breakthrough with swimming on her own. Saw some hula hooping and some polka dancing. Basically, just like everyone else’s vacations, right?

Pool fun.

M, asleep in the San Francisco airport as we awaited our 11:30 pm boarding time for the redeye to Cleveland. One of the four flights on which we had no seats until the last minute, were all seated in different areas, and then had to bargain and wheedle other passengers so that the kids didn’t have to sit alone. Oops, did a complaint sneak in there?

M did sleep on the plane and then went strong the whole day at Grammy and Grampy’s, until dinner when she fell asleep at the table (the rest of us had wisely taken multiple hour naps).

That’s all for now…
